Welcome to UIC Postdoc WebsiteThe University of Illinois at Chicago Postdoctoral Association (PDA) is a volunteer organization dedicated to addressing the needs and concerns of all UIC postdocs. The PDA works closely with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research to provide resources for professional development, generate awareness about problems common to all postdocs, and to foster a sense of community among postdoctoral scholars. In addition to organizing events and seminars to enrich the scientific experience of postdocs, we are also interested in promoting programs to encourage social interaction within the community. We invite you to become part of the PDA and welcome your ideas and suggestions to improve the quality of the postdoctoral experience. Your participation and/or leadership will assist you in building your own leadership skills, in meeting other postdocs outside of your home department, networking and negotiating with others, and in serving the community. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact a PDA leader for more information. This is a volunteer-run organization: if there is a program or service you want, come help make it happen! May 17, 2012 - Presentation by Dr. Philip Clifford (5:30pm, MBRB Auditorium/room 1152)Philip Clifford is Associate Dean for Postdoctoral Education and Professor of Anesthesiology and Physiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He has a longstanding interest in postdoctoral issues and was one of the founding members of the Advisory Board of the National Postdoctoral Association. As a part of FASEB's Science Policy Committee on Training and Careers, he was a coauthor of the Individual Development Plan for postdoctoral fellows. He also contributed to the “Compact Between Postdoctoral Appointees and Their Mentors” as a member of the AAMC GREAT Group Postdoctorate Section. This will be a joint event with the AWIS. May 30, 2012 - How to Find Funding (12:00-1:30pm)Tony Halford from OVCR will give an interactive presentation demonstrating some of the various methods postdocs can use to find sources of grant funding. Recognizing that many postdocs come from overseas and so are ineligible for many domestic grants, e.g. NIH, this session will devote a significant amount of time to lesser known opportunities that allow international applicants. Due to the interactive nature of the presentation, it will take place in OVCR's computer lab. This event will require preregistration. To pre-register, please email Jaime McCutcheon (jamesmcc@uic.edu).
