Fastlane is the electronic research administration (ERA) system for the National Science Foundation (NSF). The functions of Fastlane include proposal preparation, proposal status, project reports, system notifications & requests, and continuation funding status. All PIs and Co-PIs at UIC can use FastLane.

11 Easy Steps to Preparing a Fastlane Proposal

  1. Request a Personal Identification Number (PIN) from awards@uic.edu (312.996.2862). You will receive a confirmation email from NSF with your PIN within 24 hours of registration.

    Provide the following information:
    • Name
    • Highest degree and year conferred
    • Department
    • Street Address, City, State, Zip Code
    • Email, phone, fax

  2. Check the software requirements:
  3. Go to FastLane.

  4. Select Proposals, Awards & Status and login as a PI.

  5. Select Proposal Functions, then select Proposal Preparation. Scroll down the page and select Prepare Proposal. The Proposal Actions screen is displayed.

  6. Select Create Blank Proposal to bring up the Forms Preparation screen. Begin filling out the required forms. Access a form by clicking the Go button next to it and the Go Back button.

  7. When the proposal is complete, select Allow SRO Access, then select Allow SRO to view, edit and submit proposal. ORS will be automatically notified that your proposal is ready for review.

RULE: SRO Access must be given 5 business days before the submission deadline.

  8. A negotiator will email the PI indicating that the budget has been reviewed. The PI should make any required changes.

  9. When the entire proposal is ready for submission, select Allow SRO Access again AND email the negotiator that the proposal is ready to be sent electronically to NSF.

  10. An Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR) in ORS will electronically sign the document and send it to NSF on your behalf.

  11. Submit a hard copy PAF, fully signed, to ORS within 5 business days.
