I. Federal Requirements
A. NIH Guidelines - The NIH Guidelines state that the IBC must be composed
of at least two members unaffiliated with the university other
than their membership on the committee, an expert in plant biology and
plant containment principles, an expert in animal containment principles,
a
biological safety officer and additional faculty members with expertise
in recombinant
DNA
(rDNA) technology.
II. UIC IBC Composition
A. The committee is composed of 14 voting members and an Ex-Officio non-voting
member representing the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Institutional
Official for the IBC. The composition is shown below:
- One chair- a scientist with expertise in molecular
biology.
- Nine scientific members with expertise
in the areas of bacteriology, biochemistry, botany, medicine,
molecular biology, physiology, veterinary
medicine, and virology.
- Two safety members with expertise in biosafety
and other safety related areas.
- Two unaffiliated members.
B. The committee is charged with reviewing and approving
all research involving rDNA and/or infectious agents/toxins.
