Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI)

The CITI web-based training course is a collaborative effort between multiple institutions. It is hosted by the University of Miami.

CITI training Instructions for Initial or Continuing Education

To Register:

  1. Go to www.citiprogram.org and select "Register for the CITI Course."
  2. Under "All Others" select: University of Illinois Chicago
  3. Register for CITI by establishing your unique username and password
  4. Enter your demographic information.
  5. After you submit your demographic information you will be asked to select the focus of your research.
    • If your research focuses mainly in the behavioral or social sciences, you should choose the Social/Behavioral modules (SBR).
    • If your research focuses mainly in the biomedical or biological sciences, you should choose the Biomedical modules (Biomed).

To Complete the Course:

  • Once you have completed your registration, you can immediately begin either the Initial education course by selecting “Basic Course,” or the Continuing Education course by selecting “Refresher Course." Once you have registered, you can return to the CITI Course site at any time to complete your training.
  • After completing the course, print your 'Certificate of Completion' for your records. A notification email will also automatically be sent to the UIC OPRS Training Coordinator upon your successful completion to be entered into our database.

Reminders for Initial Education

  • You must complete the quiz at the end of each of the required modules before you can proceed to the next module.
  • You must achieve an overall passing score of 80% on these quizzes. (Quizzes can be retaken to achieve a passing score)
  • Additional optional modules are available (i.e., Human Subjects Research at VA, HIPAA and Human Subjects Research, Hot Topics and Conflicts of Interest in Research). These modules do not replace the UIC HIPAA Research 101 or VA training requirements and are available only through the Biomedical course.

Reminders for Continuing Education

  • You must complete the quiz at the end of each module before proceeding to the next section.
  • You must achieve an overall passing score of 80% on these quizzes.
