PORTUGUESE UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

WELCOME

Portuguese is one of the world's major languages, ranked 6th according to number of native speakers. It is the language with the largest number of speakers in South America, spoken by nearly all of Brazil's population, which amounts to over 51% of the continent's population even though it is the only Portuguese-speaking nation in the Americas. It is also an important language to Portugal's former colonial possessions in Africa. 

The Department of Romance Studies presently offers a language course in Portuguese designed for speakers of another Romance language. We are in the process of adding a second semester to this series so that students can achieve a intermediate to advance level of  competency in their reading, writing, and speaking skills.

COURSES

240 Rapid Portuguese for Spanish Speakers/Speakers of Romance Languages
4 hours. Characteristics of Portuguese grammar from the perspective of speakers of Spanish, leading to basic conversational skills in Portuguese. Prerequisite(s): Advanced student of Spanish and two 200-level Spanish courses or consent of the instructor.
