Handmade Pledge!

Have you taken the handmade pledge for the holiday season?

"I pledge to buy handmade this holiday season (or handmake my gifts) and request that others do the same for me."

Take the pledge or find out more here at www.buyhandmade.org
.

Why buy handmade?

Buying hand made is better for people.  The ascendancy of chain store culture and global manufacturing has left us dressing, furnishing, and decorating alike. We are encouraged to be consumers, not producers, of our own culture. Our ties to the local and human sources of our goods have been lost. Buying handmade helps us reconnect.

Buying handmade is better for the environment.  The accumulating environmental effects of mass production are a major cause of global warming and the poisoning of our air, water and soil. Every item you make or purchase from a small-scale independent artist or crafter strikes a small blow to the forces of mass production.

The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum is part of UIC College of Architecture and the Arts and serves as a dynamic memorial to social reformer and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Jane Addams (1860-1935) and other resident social reformers whose work influenced the lives of their immigrant neighbors as well as national and international public policy.  The Museum's exhibits and public programs preserves and develops the original Hull-House site for the continuation of the historic settlement house vision, linking research, education, and social engagement.

More information about the museum and its programs can be found at:

Fulfilling the handmade pledge is so easy with all of the beautiful handmade goods available through Renegade Handmade, a Chicago-based organization!

The Renegade Craft Fair is a unique DIY event organized by Sue Blatt. When this event began in 2003, there was nothing else like it. The organizers took up crafts as a hobby after college and decided to try selling their stuff in local fairs. To their surprise, no events were catering to the burgeoning DIY craft community or even prohibited crafts all together. So they thought of organizing a fair of their own that tapped into this movement and provided a laid back, fresh venue for artists and shoppers alike.
The timing of the Renegade Craft Fair was perfect since it coincided with the resurgence of crafting as a new generation of people have reclaimed crafts and put a contemporary spin on them. At the RCF you'll find all sorts of cool stuff ranging from comic books to cool craft patterns, and gigposters to reconstructed clothing.
The Renegade Craft Fair draws vendors from all over the country and Canada, showcasing the coolest crafts around, including DIY knitting, jewelry, sewn items, paper goods, silkscreening, comics, zines and more! Check out their scrapbook to get an idea of what the fair offers!

They also opened a storefront in Chicago in July 2007 featuring items from over 100 crafters!  Stop by at 1924 W. Division St. or if you're a crafter interested in consigning, visit us online at renegadehandmade.com for more info!

The Renegade Holiday Craft Fair is cosponsored by the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, Craft: craftzine.com, ReadyMade, Adorn Magazine, and Venuszine.
