Background
I completed my bachelor’s degree here at the University
of Illinois at Chicago. Since then, I have remained an active member
of our staff/student body. For over 6 years, I worked as an academic
advisor for students pursuing degrees in the health field. In June, 2000, I joined Dr. Spring’s research lab as their Research
Program Coordinator. In that capacity, I assist with the coordination
of the Carbohydrate Craving and NA/PA studies.
Activities and
Interests
Other interests besides my love of education, students, and learning in
general include: love of animals, sports and physical fitness, and Latino
literature. Ever since I was a little girl, I remember my desire to help
and protect animals. I get tremendous joy in educating children about
the proper and humane treatment of these precious companions. Currently,
I am a proud “mommy” of two dogs (Ambar &
Maya), a rabbit (Sofia), and two parakeets (I just called them ‘birdies’).
As you might already guess, I am a vegetarian. When I am not playing
with my “kids”, I enjoy playing racquetball and working out to keep in
shape. As for my love of literature, I wish I had more time to read the
works of new artists. I tend to read and re-read the works of the old
greats…Garcia-Marquez, Unamuno, Rulfo, and others. I also like surfing,
skydiving, mountain climbing, bungee jumping, snowboarding, motor-cross,
and monster truck rallies. Nah...just kidding!
I am fairly involved in various Latino organizations dealing with issues
of health, education, employment and representation of Latinos both at
the student and faculty/staff level. I am currently one of the Co-Chairs
of the Latino Committee on University Affairs (LCUA). I am also an active
member of the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Latinos (CCSL).
My involvement in these two organizations allows me the opportunity to
contribute and have an impact on important issues affecting the whole
UIC community.
Goals
I am considering pursuing an MBA program in the near
future.
