Kristin Schneider M.A.

Kristin_image Background
In 1997, I graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. As an undergraduate, I gained research experience at the University's Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention working on a study that examined two different treatments for smoking cessation.  Upon graduation I worked with Dr. Timothy Strauman and Dr. Gregory Kolden at the University of Wisconsin Psychiatry Department.  During my tenure there, I worked on a number of different research studies that investigated issues such as the psychological and physiological effects of an exercise group for women with breast cancer, the development of a new psychotherapy for depression based on self-discrepancy theory, and the process of psychotherapy as rated by the patient and therapist.

Current Activities and Interests
My research interests involve exercise, binge eating, the relationship between energy intake and expenditure, and mood.  Specifically I am interested in examining how exercise influences energy intake and mood in sedentary and overweight individuals.  I aim to explore factors that may explain the eating behavior of overweight women after exercise.  Specifically, I aim to examine whether overweight women, particularly those prone to binge, complement exercise with eating, especially of high-fat foods that may enhance positive affect.  Additionally, my Master's thesis examined the influence of exercise and weight concern on mood in female smokers enrolled in a smoking cessation program.  Initiating exercise during other major lifestyle changes can be difficult.  I explored whether an individual difference factor, weight concern, might clarify the relationship between exercise and mood during nicotine withdrawal.   As predicted, highly weight concerned women reported greater mood improvements from exercise.  After completing my Ph.D., I would like to pursue a career at a University where I can continue to research relationships between exercise and eating, as well as teach and mentor students.
