Neal Doran, M.A.

Neal_imageBackground
Neal graduated with B.S from the University of Wisconsin in 1997.  Prior to graduation he gained research experience in smoking cessation working with Dr. Tim Baker at the Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention.  After graduation Neal moved to Virginia, where he spent 2 years working at 2 inpatient psychiatric institutions, Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg and Central State Hospital in Petersburg (including the forensic unit at Central State, where Lorena Bobbitt served her sentence--but fortunately not while Neal was there).  Deciding to return to smoking research, he then came to UIC in order to join Dr. Spring's research group.

Current Activities and Interests
Currently, Neal is a 6th year graduate student in the clinical psychology program at UIC.  His primary research focus is on exploring specific mechanisms that might explain specifically why highly impulsive people are overly prone to risky, thrill-seeking, and addictive behaviors.  His Master's thesis suggested that more impulsive smokers have a harder time quitting than other smokers.  Neal's dissertation, which examines the influence of impulsivity on smokers' reactivity to smoking cues, was recently funded by the American Heart Association.
