Doctor of Philosophy in
Nursing Science Handbook
Dear Doctoral Student:
Welcome to the UIC College of Nursing. We are pleased that you selected the UIC College of Nursing for your doctoral education in nursing science.
Doctoral education provides a student with countless opportunities to grow both as a professional and as an individual. These opportunities take place in numerous settings, both formal and informal, and they are both social and solitary. Time spent interacting with faculty and peers are complemented by time spent reading, writing and in thoughtful reflection. Doctoral education is as crucial to the profession as it is to the individual. It is a key for ensuring that the profession has sufficient numbers of scientists to provide leadership in discovering and implementing innovations to improve patient care and health care delivery systems.
The intent of this handbook is to facilitate your doctoral education experience by providing in a single place an overview of the UIC College of Nursling’s doctoral program and its policies. It was designed as a comprehensive sourcebook that includes information on everything from your initial registration for coursework to filing for graduation. An initial read will provide you with an excellent overview of our program and the various policies that will shape your educational experience. Following your initial perusal, I urge you to keep the handbook handy; an electronic version will be available on the UIC College of Nursing website. Of course, I, your advisor, faculty, and the Office of Academic Programs are available to answer questions and work with you as you progress through your doctoral studies. We look forward to doing so, and wish you success in your doctoral program.
Sincerely,
Marquis D. Foreman, PhD, RN, FAAN
Professor and Associate Dean for Nursing Science Studies
