Management

(Director of the Great Lakes Centers), Susan Scrimshaw (Dean
of UIC School of Public Health)
On August 30, 2004, the first class of the new Program in Public Health
Management at the National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA)
participated in the annual commencement ceremony. The new public
health management program is a joint activity of NaUKMA and the Kyiv
Institute of Postgraduate Medicine. The Ukrainian leaders of
this new program are Dr. Irena Griga, Dean of the Public Health Program,
and Dr. Yuri Voronenko, Director of the Kyiv Institute of Postgraduate
Medicine. NaUKMA’s international partners in this new program,
the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and the University of Maastricht
from the Netherlands, also participated in the ceremony as Visiting
Faculty.
Susan Scrimshaw PhD, Dean of the University of Illinois at Chicago
School of Public Health (UIC SPH), and Daniel Hryhorczuk, MD, MPH,
Professor and Director of the Great Lakes Centers at UIC SPH, participated
in the commencement ceremony. Dean Scrimshaw delivered a welcome
address from UIC and joined the podium next to Vyacheslav Broukhovetsky,
PhD, President of NaUKMA and Mr. Yuri Lytvyn, the Head of the Ukrainian
Parliament. Dr. Hryhorczuk participated in the ceremony as a
Visiting Faculty member of the new NaUKMA School of Public Health.
UIC was invited to assist NaUKMA in the development of this program
by Dr. Broukhovetsky when he visited UIC last year. UIC and NaUKMA
had signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities
for faculty and student exchange. Dr. Hryhorczuk and Dr. Scrimshaw,
together with Irena Griga, PhD, the Dean of the NaUKMA program in public
health, were successful in obtaining a highly competitive grant from
the Association Liaison Office for University Cooperation in Development
in support of this partnership. The partnership was strongly
supported by the USAID Mission in Ukraine. The partnership was
also endorsed by the Chicago-Ukraine Sister Cities Program and by the
Kyiv Mohyla Foundation.
The new ALO grant supports the partnership between NaUKMA and the
University of Illinois at Chicago and will include faculty and student
exchanges between NaUKMA and the University of Illinois School of Public
Health over the next eighteen months. Dr. Scrimshaw has lectured
at NaUKMA on “Behavior and Health”, Dr. Hryhorczuk lectured
on “Epidemiologic Study Design”, and Dr. Claudia Morrissey
lectured on “Women’s Health Issues.” In July,
four faculty and administrators from NaUKMA will spend the summer semester
at UIC SPH auditing classes, interacting with UIC faculty, and learning
about the curriculum at operation of UIC SPH.
