BACKGROUND
FOR THE CAROTID DISTAL VERTEBRAL ARTERY BYPASS


In 1959, Dr. Carney performed his first carotid artery surgery and
in 1972, his first vertebral artery.
On January 12, 1976 - he presented his method of dynamic assessment of extracranial arteries to the vascular section of NWU.
On October 13, 1976 - he presented the cine "Surgery of the Vertebral Artery" to the ACS convention in San Francisco.
One year later, on October 5, 1977 - he performed First Carotid Distal Vertebral Artery Bypass. The report and the cine of this operation was presented on May 3, 1978 to the Denton A Cooley Cardiovascular Society in Houston; on May 19, 1978 to the clinical EEG association, AMEEGA, in Kansas City, KS and on October 17, 1978 to the ACS convention in San Francisco.
The procedure was recorded in Clin EEG. 1978;9:105-109.
In early 1981, the book . DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF BRAIN ISCHEMIA. CT Brain Blood Flow. Brain Hemodynamics,Carotid and Vertebral Artery Surgery Advances in Neurology. Volume 30, was published by the Raven Press.
Chapter 19 of the book, "Vertebral Artery Surgery: Historical Development, Basic Concepts of Brain Hemodynamics, and Clinical Experience of 102 cases" laid the foundation for the diagnostic approach to the selection of cases.
