Phil 402: Topics in Philosophy of Mind: Pain
A survey of the philosophical literature on bodily pain and pain perception Topics will include: the anatomy and physiology of the nocioceptive system, philosophical theories about the nature of pain sensations, atypical pain phenomena, masochism and emotional pain, the ethics of medical pain management, and the morality of torture. Prerequisite: PHIL 202 or permission of the instructor.

Phil 406: Philosophy of Language
A survey of the philosophy of language. We will explore several questions: What should a theory of meaning explain, and what form should the explanation take? What are the mechanisms by which words come to refer? How do the contexts in which language is used affect the import of our utterances? How and to what degree is translation between languages possible? Prerequisite: one course in symbolic logic (Phil 102, 210, 410, 416, or 417) or consent of the instructor. In addition to the logic prerequisite, at least one 200-level course in philosophy is strongly recommended.
