Finance 594: Commodities, Energy and Related Markets
Instructor: Dale Rosenthal
Tuesdays, 6:00PM-8:30PM, Lecture Center A7
First class: 13 January 2009
This course introduces markets for commodities, energy, transport,
weather, and emissions. After this course, students should
understand:
differences between commodity and financial markets;
the importance of commodity risk management; and,
relationships between many commodity and financial contracts.
A preliminary syllabus
is also available to see what kind of fun we'll be having. I'll also soon post a graph I made with GraphViz showing the web of explicit relationships between commodities.
Surprisingly, this will be:
the only commodities course offered in the Chicago area; and,
the only comprehensive commodities course in the US.
We will be covering all commodities: ag, energy, metals,
weather, and emissions --- not just one of these complexes.
We will also be touring related facilities. Confirmed tours include
the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, a heat/electricity cogeneration
plant, and an ethanol refinery. Other possible tours include an
aluminum smelter, an oil refinery, a grain elevator, and a cocoa
processor.
