Remembering Maggie Daley

I had the privilege of meeting with Mrs. Maggie Daley on three occasions in joint efforts to increase the
connections between university science and the apprenticeship programs she had created in
After School Matters. Her work there was based on the simple idea of joining the cultural community of a
great city to the thousands of teens in its high schools. It later expanded into sports, technology, and science,
which is how I met her. Absent her vision and leadership, none of it would have happened. I last saw her when she visited the science37 program at Foreman High School in Spring, 2011, accompanied by then mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel. The instructors, including Sara Marchlewicz (UIC Learning Sciences), Linda Marton (Foreman science and the originator of the After School Matters progrem there), and Michelle Frack (UIC Biology), had worked with the teens to prepare demonstrations for their end-of-year project. The teens were excellent in their safety practice, all wearing goggles as the guests arrived. Mrs. Daley did not hesitate to put on a pair also, ensuring that Mr. Emanuel wore his too! It was a great example of how she would enter into and join in the activity, eagerly listening to the teens and their emerging talent in presenting science. |
