Increasing tobacco taxes is the single most effective means of reducing tobacco use, particularly among young people. This presentation covered state cigarette excise taxes ranked by state, trends in taxes and price per pack, and the use of price to reduce cigarette use. Dr. Chaloupka briefly reviewed cigarette increases in CA, OR, MA, and NY and the impact on their health system. The presentation concludes that substantial increases in excise taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products significantly reduce the prevalence of tobacco use and, as a result, sharply reduce the public health tool caused by tobacco use.
