A postdoctoral or visiting scholar position is available after 3/1 in the lab of Prof. Jie Liang at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The planned research will be in the area of structural bioinformatics. It will involve method development, implementation, and applications of novel computatonal approaches, including Monte Carlo importance sampling, for studying protein stability and protein functions.
The research carried out in the Liang laboratory encompass surface
mapping of protein functions, membrane protein assembly, scoring
functions, lattice and off-lattice modeling of proteins, structural
characterization of SNPs, and functional annotation of proteins. The
overall environment of the lab offers broad exposure to new theory,
methodology, interdisciplinary concepts, and advanced computational

Applicants for this position must have a PhD degree or equivalent in one of the following fields: Computational Biology, Physics, Biophysics, Computational Chemistry, Computer Science, Statistics, or in an allied field. He or she must have a strong background in quatitative science, and proficent programming skills in C/C++ or Fortran. Detailed nowledge of biological macromolecules is a bonus.
The specific duties of the position will include conducting research, collaborating with other researchers on the projects, writing research papers, presenting research results at conferences, and assisting in grant writing. Scientific curiosity, self-motivation, and hard work are essential for this position.
The Liang lab is equipped with a linux cluster consisting of 50 processors, and have numerous SGI and windows-based workstations.
