Computer stuph

  • Terminals, Terminals, Terminals! (I like dec vt220, and vt100, and WYSE's)
Ok, I now have 6 vt320's and an old HP POS. I don't think I want any more terminals right now.
  • A PowerMac
The G4 is still looking kewl
Eloise got me a dual 450 with a 15" LCD for Xmas last year. I'm still surprised.
  • A K6
Eloise has one, Mike has one. The K7 Thunderbirds are definitely nice, but I can't decide if I should wait for the K8, or just until AMD releases the SMP specs for the Tbird.
Well, it took a year for AMD to make an SMP Tbird, but the Athalon MPs are out. I'll still wait for Sledgehammer. Though a PC new enough to have PCI slots might be nice.
  • An Alpha, while I'm dreaming!
I'm not dreaming of Alphas anymore. They're a bit wiggy, and Compaq owns them now.
DEC actually sold them off to API? before Compaq bought them. Anyway, Compaq is now owned by HP (or is it the other way round?)
  • large 30pin memory (4meg or more per simm)
They never made 30pins bigger than 4M. And I have more of that than I need.
  • an AT multi-serial card (for terminals!!)
I have 1 dumb and 2 smart DigiBoards now.
And none of them work! Stupid ISA bus. This is why I need a PCI system, unless you happen to have a power supply and cabling diagrams for an Equinox ELS 8.
  • an SVGA color monitor (the bigger, the better!)
I just replaced my 15" MAG (1280x1024) with a 15" NEC that also does the same. Bigger means more desktop realestate. A flat screen would be nice, tho
LCDs are NICE, and I like their lower power use. Shutting down blind sucks, and CRTs eat the UPS.
  • IDE harddrives, everyone loves harddrives!
When I wrote this, 2.1G was big. I've filled a 4.3 and a 20G since. Data expands to fill all available space. I now have SCSI capability, but the drives lag on price and size, so big ATA drives are more reasonable. I like IBM drives, btw.
  • modems, any speed, internal or external
Ixnay on the internals. External voice capable, rs232 modems only please. I need one to play with voicegetty.
  • an IDE (atapi) CD drive (2, 2x or 4x are great)
Um not anymore. I have a few

    Stereo stuph

  • Mission Bookself Speakers
    Not available in US
  • an amp (lot's of inputs)
    More components now than then
Phono seems to be disappearing on all but the top of the line now. :(
  • an MD recorder
Now back on the market! Not portable, please!
  • a DAT recorder
Only portable or studio grade available now, $2000 - $15000, I don't think so.
  • dual cassette recorder
    just in case
  • a shortwave reciever that's the same size as the rest of my stereo (yeah, um these start around $700 and go up fast!)
    not as interesting anymore

    Other stuph

  • A car (as if!)
Eloise bought me one for Xmas last year! Ok, she actually bought an old 'Burban for herself just before newyears, but she still hasn't taken drivers ed, so I'm the sole driver.
I've got a 2000 Neon, and she hasn't sold the truck yet, so we have more vehicles than drivers.
  • a 900Mhz cordless telephone.
    Um, I've got 3.
One with a built in DTAD and speakerphone would be nice tho.
  • More free time (don't we all!)
    no comment

    New stuff

  • A scsi backup tape drive, preferably 8mm. (unfortunately big ticket)
I've got an HP 4mm on loan from Seva, and an ATAPI TR4. Can't seem to get either to behave right now. Bigger capacity would be nice too!
  • A fast, static, always-up net connection at home. With a "Public IP" address while I'm at it.
I'm looking into DSL (or Sprint's Wireless), but I'll have to sell it to the GF and roomie

    New Stuff '01

  • A DVD player (with a little content control as possible, and
  • a TV that's up to the task.
