If you are driving, you can park in any of the public
parking lots. Parking Lot 4 at the northwest corner of Halsted and Taylor
is most convenient, although occasionally full. Speakers should ask
their hosts for a parking validation sticker.
The entrance to Lot 4
is on the north side of Taylor Street, half a block east of Halsted,
and half a block west of the Taylor Street off-ramp
from I-90/94 (the two interstates
are conicident at that point). Note that if you are arriving via
I-55, you will need to take I-90/94 just a bit north of the I-55/90/94
junction.
If you are arriving at O'Hare International Airport,
which is in the extreme north-west edge of the cit, you
can travel to UIC directly by subway (CTA Blue Line). This costs
$1.75, and takes you from inside the airport to the UIC-Halsted CTA Station
(at Halsted and Harrison), a few blocks north of the department, in about
50 minutes.
The alternative is a taxi (roughly $35 to downtown Chicago).
Tell the cab driver to take you to the south-west corner of Halsted
and Taylor; there is an exit off I-90 (the expressway from
O'Hare to downtown) at Taylor Street. Note that rush hour on 90 is
all day, and that driving times from O'Hare to downtown can easily
exceed 90 minutes, and consequently can cost in excess of $40.
If you are arriving at Midway Airport which is southwest of UIC, subway travel is straightforward and safe (Orange Line to downtown, then change to the Blue Line) but it is usually faster to take a taxi ($30). The taxi travel time from UIC to Midway is generally less than 30 minutes.
