I am an Assistant Professor of the
Learning
Sciences and Curriculum Studies at the
University of Illinois at Chicago's
College of Education. My research and teaching
focus on how people learn with graphic and geographic data, including history and science learning with tools like geographic information systems (GIS). My PhD is in
Learning Sciences
program at Northwestern University.
Current and recent projects include:
- American Migrations, funded by an NSF Early Career Award, a 5-year program of research to investigate teaching and learning the histories of African American and Latino migrations in Americn history, using GIS to map historical census data
- GIS for History, an NEH-funded project to create an on-line
GIS resource of interactive US historic census data maps and curriculum for
use in high school and university classrooms.
- Teaching and Learning with GIS,
an NSF-funded research project examining middle-grades students'
development of scientific reasoning and reflective thinking with
geographic data in science and social studies inquiry projects.
- Teachers
Infusing
Technology in Urban Schools, a U.S. Department of Education-funded
project to help teacher preparation programs develop meaningful uses of
technology in teacher education courses and public school field
experience placements.
- The UIC Big City Teacher
Preparation Initiative, a MacArthur Foundation-funded project to
develop resources for urban teacher education. GIS data mapping
is used to represent and study
relationships between the university's teacher preparation programs,
public schools, and Chicago
communities.
