Assignment 3

INTERCULTURAL CONTINUUM

Purposes

To understand the varying degrees of what it means to be intercultural.

To allow you to reflect on the impact of intercultural degrees on communication.

Directions

Write a one-page paper identifying five communication interactions you participated in actively with different partners that you think of as intercultural. Describe these interactions briefly (one paragraph), focusing on the kind and quality of communication. Then comment on whether you believe you achieved mutual understanding and why in these interactions, and note the differences and similarities you perceive between yourself and the people you interacted with. Finally, on a single line, list the initials of the persons you interacted with, ranking them on a continuum from most to least intercultural communication.

The paper must be typewritten and proofread.

Submit it through the electronic drop box by the beginning of the next class meeting.

Also print out a copy to share at the beginning of the next class.

The writing itself can be informal and does not require library research or preparation beyond your own knowledge.

Outcome

Come prepared to give a short overview of your paper to a small group in the next class meeting. Also think about how the experience of writing the paper affected you in any way.
