INTERCULTURAL EVENTS

Task

Attend three different intercultural events and write three two-page papers in response to your experiences.

Directions

Select three different intercultural events, such as a festival, music or theatre performance, craft demonstration, or the like.

Clear the events ahead of time with me (via e-mail), to make sure that the events you have chosen are intercultural and not too much alike.

Write up your experiences in a way that demonstrates the knowledge you’ve acquired from the course. Keep in mind the following:

1. Describe the event, its purpose, the cultural group involved, and how you learned about it.

2. Compare the event to anything similar (or serving similar purposes) in your own culture.

3. What about the experience did you see and understand confidently (with competence interculturally)?

4. What was culturally puzzling to you (not understood or handled with intercultural competence)?

5. After the event, list the major difficulties in communication you would expect between the culture and your own.

6. How did you feel or respond to communicating in the different cultural situation?

7. In one sentence, what important conclusion about intercultural communication can you draw from the experience?

The six pages (total) must be typewritten, double-spaced proofread, printed out, and turned in at the beginning of class on the due date.

Outcome

Come prepared to discuss your experiences extemporaneously.
