THE FIRST US-India WORKSHOP ON
GLOBAL GEOENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING CHALLENGES

Date: November 7, 2010
Place: New Delhi, India

About Workshop
This workshop will be the first US-India workshop organized under the cooperative agreement between the Geo-Institute (GI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) signed in 2008. This will be a one-day workshop with a special focus on "Global Geoenvironmental Engineering Challenges". The workshop will be held in conjunction with the 6th International Congress on Environmental Geotechnics (6ICEG), which will be held in New Delhi, India, during November 8-12, 2010 (see www.6iceg.org). The International Congress on Environmental Geotechnics is held every four years in different locations under the sponsorship of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). It focuses on all aspects of Geoenvironmental problems around the world in which Geotechnical Engineers play a vital role in developing technological solutions to protect public health and the environment.

As the global technological and economic leader, the US has established many state-of-the-art practices and technologies across the field of Geoenvironmental Engineering. Yet, many of these practices may not be directly transferrable or applicable to the needs of developing countries.

India is a vast nation with over 1 billion citizens. Many economic and policy leaders predict that India will rapidly develop and emerge as a "superpower" over the next century. As in many developing nations, Geoenvironmental researchers and professionals in India have developed practices and solutions to meet the unique Geoenvironmental challenges faced in India. Many of these practices will be very useful to meet the needs and challenges of other developing nations. Read more »

Objectives
The field of Geoenvironmental Engineering has experienced rapid growth over the past decade. There has also been an evolution in the field during this period of growth, leading to an expansion in the scope of work for Geoenvironmental Engineers. Geoenvironmental Engineers were once mostly responsible for characterization of contaminated sites, design of in-situ barriers and landfills .. Read more »

Pre-Workshop Activities
Extensive information exchange among the selected participants will occur prior to the Workshop. In particular, the focus will be made to engage the participants to discuss the current state of the art and practice of Geoenvironmental Engineering and various emerging challenges and opportunities in global Geoenvironmental Engineering. In addition, research priorities will be identified. This will be accomplished by the .. Read more »
