photo of Stacey S. Horn Stacey S. Horn, is an associate professor of educational psychology and human development in the College of Education at UIC. She has been studying the issue of group inclusion and exclusion in adolescence for the past few years. This work looks at the underlying moral, social, and personal implications of exclusion, as well as discrimination based on a variety of social categories: gender, race, sexual orientation, and social reference group membership (i.e. jocks, nerds), as well as how adolescents reason about these issues. Her dissertation examined the impact that group status and social identity have on adolescents' evaluations and reasoning regarding the exclusion of others based on their social reference group status. Dr. Horn was the recipient of the Outstanding Dissertation Award from Division 7 of the American Psychological Society.

Dr. Horn is currently serving as the principal investigator for a research study on adolescent and young adults' attitudes and beliefs about homosexuality, and the relationship between these beliefs and adolescents reasoning regarding the exclusion, teasing, and harassment of peers who are gay, lesbian, or gender non-conforming. This study is funded by a 1-year grant from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Campus Research Board. Additionally, Dr. Horn is serving as project director for the development of the National Clearinghouse for Safe Schools Coalitions and GLBT youth issues that will bring together resources, information, curriculum, and research on GLBT youth and school. Additionally, the clearinghouse will serve as a virtual community and network of individuals who are working to create safer schools and communities for GLBT youth, teachers, and parents.

In addition to these activities, Stacey is active in the secondary teacher education program at UIC where she teaches adolescent development to pre- and in-service teachers and serves on the Secondary Teacher Education Advisory Committee. Prior to receiving her doctorate and coming to UIC Stacey worked as a high school English teacher and a college advisor in Minnesota and has been active in numerous non-profit organizations that focus on children and youth both in Minnesota and Maryland. Most recently, she serves as co-chair, trainer, and speaker for an organization that provides staff development training on GLBT youth for Chicagoland area schools.
