The Office was formed to serve two purposes:

  • To facilitate the work of UIC scholars from a range of disciplines who work on issues of moral development, character formation, and education.
  • To help educators, parents, and schools learn more about children's morality, character formation and education through publications, courses, workshops, communications via this home page, and other forms of service.

The Office provides an umbrella for scholarship and educational outreach on both moral development and character formation. Some authorities see these approaches as mutually exclusive -- and there are surely contrast between the approaches. This umbrella structure, however, allows us to provide practitioners with access to options congruent with their particular philosophies. In addition, this umbrella permits us to bring together university faculty with a wide range of perspectives on the nature and processe of moral development and character formation. By engaging dialogue among contrasting points of view, we hope to broaden understanding of the processes of social development and socialization.
