West Side Domestic Abuse Program

A research-practice collaboration

In 1997, the UIC Great Cities project funded the Jane Addams College of Social Work, in conjunction with the UIC Department of Psychiatry to and the Chicago Abused Women Coalition to:

This university-government-community partnership was designed to provide research-based batterers intervention programs on Chicago's west side. The clinical portion of the program was initially housed at two sites: the Institute for Juvenile Research/UIC Department of Psychiatry and Haymarket Center.  In 2003, West Side Domestic Abuse Program left both Haymarket and UIC and incorporated as a not-for-profit  agency located at 2741 North Spaulding, Chicago IL  60647

In addition to developing a much needed batterer intervention program for West Side residents, this project provide an opportunity to develop a field-based research program in an area widely regarded as under-researched: characteristics of men who batter and the effectiveness of programs designed to prevent their continued violence.
