Cal Chany, Ph. D., Assistant Professor BS, MS Chemistry Northern Illinois University Students and Faculty contact me with comments, suggestions or questions cchany@rush.edu or magyar@uic.edu My background includes chemistry in the areas of herbicides, water soluble polymers, carbohydrates andthe chemistry of Hypervalent Iodine compunds (Iodine(III) Chemistry). Current research centers around non-cytotoxic drug development for the topical prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Teaching has also been a rewarding experience, I am now participating in a Polk Bros. funded program to teach chemistry to Chicago Public School Teachers. The CAPE Program (Chemistry and Physics Endorsement Program) is aimed at easing the shortage of Science Teachers in the Public School System. When not doing reaseach or teaching I can be found on the bike trails of Illinois, camping and hiking with my wife or parked in front of a computer screen learning how to build better web pages...taking a break now and then to attend to the whims of our cats. You may freely link to my page as long as the following criteria are met: 1.) You may not charge anyone for the information found here. 2.) Please do not down load and modify my pages or anyone else's pages to whom I have linked without written permission from me or the author of said pages. 3.) Printing out of my pages for distribution requires my permission (note: linking is free, saves trees). 4.) If you use my pages for your class please e-mail me your name, school and class for which this will be used (okay I guess chemistry is rather obvious, how about grade level). I will add your name and school to my honor roll. 5.) If you have suggestions for links, or to make this a better teaching tool please share your ideas and I'll see what can be added. I have tried to focus on the fundamentals of laboratory such as, how to prepare for lab, taking good notes (recording data), thinking about calculations (i.e. Do these numbers make sense?), errors which can arise and putting it all together in a final report. This online guide is intended to supplement the students' laboratory experiment book, it is not intended as a replacement (sorry). Questions relating to specific experiments should be directed to your course instructor and your graduate teaching assistant. |
