- The 2001 UIC Engineering Design Expo Competition
First Place in Process Design-Production Category Award Partners for Clean Air at its 2000 Annual Recognition and Awards Breakfast held on June 1, 2000 at the Omni Chicago Hotel in Chicago presented Awards of Appreciation to four UIC Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Students (Clint McElroy, Mike Viirre, Steve Van Dyke and Anna Wytaniec) and their faculty advisor (Prof. G.A. Mansoori) in recognition of "Excellence in Environmental Improvement Design Project (Recycling of Plastics)" which the team completed during their Senior Design course in Spring Semester 2000. Partners for Clean Air is a coalition of more than 400 businesses, government agencies and public health advocacy groups committed to improving Chicago's air quality. The June 1, 2000 recognition and awards breakfast was sponsored by the Illinois Environmental protection Agency and the American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago.- and

They won their "category awards" as well as most of the other outstanding awards at the 2000 UIC Engineering Expo held on Thursday April 27, 2000.
Thanks are due to Dean Norsym for accepting some of the late entries, ChE Corporate Judges (Anju Bhatia of IEPA, Nancy Rocha of Eng Consul, Kathy Navara of UOP, Mary Kay Springman of Abbott Lab, Kim Reckenbeil of Abbott Lab) and ChE Faculty Judges (Dr. Brezinski and Dr. Turian) who agreed to serve as judges for this competition.
Thanks are also due to all the Expo visitors who voted in favor of a ChE project (In Situ Production of Rocket Propellant, Team Members: Zachary Fijal, Constantinos Loukeris, Zhaleh Naghibzadeh, Michael Redel, John Walsdorf; Faculty Advisor: Dr. G.A. Mansoori) to receive the VISITORS' BALLOT AWARD. Considering the fact that there were 50 outstanding design projects presented at the Expo this award has a very special meaning for the kind of students that we have and the education that we give to our ChE students.

BASF Riverview Site-EPA Site Remediation

BASF site in Riverview Michigan has recently been investigated and
discovered the level of cyanide, ammonia and some toxic heavy metals
exceed the EPA for soil and ground water. More dangerously cyanide, lead
and mercury were reported to leach to the groundwater to the to the nearby
Detroit River.
- Our project is the design evaluation of the total site remediation. The design is based on a thermal decomposition system to treat the soil and a pump-treat system to remove the contaminants from the water. The total cost for treating the whole site is $ 1,840,566. The operation will take about 16 months. In comparing our process with design with other site remediations done in the past, our cost is quite reasonable.
