Course Description:
This class is for freshmen students only. It meets during the first
10 weeks of the semester. This class introduces you to prepare and benefit
from the available resources to acquire knowledge in a university setting.
This trains you to practice the basic intellectual skills, such as analysis,
interpretation, critical thinking and writing, and problem solving.
In addition to this you will be presented with a series of lectures and
films on some basic aspects of Environmental Pollution, especially related
to Lake Michigan basin.
Objective of this Section:
This seminar course is designed to introduce you to the university studies
so that you can get maximum benefit of your education at UIC. The meetings
will involve workshops and information about the resources available at
UIC, provided by administrators of various university facilities, such
as financial aid, library, Honor’s College, Writing Center, Academic Skills
Center, Career Center, Campus Safety, Wellness Center, Study Abroad, etc.
We will visit some of the facilities, such as Jane Adam Hull House, Science
Library, Biology Department, etc.
The lectures presented by Dr. M.A.Q.Khan will cover some of the
basic material on environment and its pollution with emphasis on Great
Lakes. Some available films on various aspects of environmental pollution
will be presented.
During workshops and lectures informal discussion will be held and
participation by students will be encouraged.
STUDENTS.
Student participation in class, attendance, and completion of assignments
(summaries of lecture presentations and a final 2-page report on the theme
of lectures) will be used to assign a letter grade in this course.
Attendance. Attendance
record will be maintained each day. Students are required to be in class
on time. Only two classes can be missed and that too with the permission
of Dr. Khan
or your TA.
