Employment

Research skills

  • Familiar with software and methodology used in analysis (including statistics) of spatial data  (such as ESRI ArcMap™ and Systat™)
  • Familiar with the processes and logistics of establishing field research projects – getting permits from local, state, and federal authorities, processes of Animal Care Protocols, etc.
  • Experience collection of a wide array of data types in the field, from water quality measurements (pH, turbidity, O2, etc.), small soil and flying invertebrates, to non-invasive and remote collection of large wildlife through signs and remote cameras.
  • Working with private landowners and other stakeholders in establishing research sites in public and private locations (public parks, private woodland, backyards, highway intersections, etc…)

Teaching Skills:

  • Teaching in lecture hall settings – use of slide presentations, online resources, Blackboard, lecture methodologies for large classroom size
  • Teaching of small graduate student classes in seminar settings – presentations with discussions, student team presentations.
  • Teaching in wet labs – dissections, live samples, breeding fruit flies, etc.
  • Teaching computer labs – use educational software for teaching and for independent work by students.
  • Teaching field labs – plant and animal collection and identification, transects field experiments (e.g., seed trays for rodents).
  • Preparatory work for labs – setting up ecology lab and field experiments for multiple (8-10)  laboratory sections (live trapping, plant sampling on transects, sampling of aquatic fauna)
  • Teaching experience in non-academic settings:  extra-curricular activities for elementary school children, and instruction for outdoor activity for families.
