This course is the first part of a three-part history of photography-- 20th Century Photography and Contemporary Photography follow in the next two semesters. The course is designed to offer a wide cultural and artistic history of photography for artists, writers, historians, art historians and interested humanists. Readings are extensive and demanding-- they include a standard textbook and readings in primary materials. You will look at many, many images: mainly photographs, but also paintings, etchings, wood engravings, newspaper pages and the like. You will spend a good deal of time looking at original photographs in Chicago's museums and galleries. Expect to be inundated by information and images. Two short papers, both responses to local exhibitions, midterm and final. Discussion will be expected.
