Theoretical and Research Foundations of Communicative Language Teaching

Goals and Purposes
The overall goal of this course is to give all incoming language instructors an overview of communicative task-based language instruction. This overview consists of theory, research, and practical application. Although you are not expected to become an expert in the fields of second language acquisition and language teaching, you are expected to be able to explain and support the instructional program used at UIC. To put this in other words, not only should you know what you are doing, you should also know why. When you graduate and seek an academic or teaching position, you will need to write a statement about your teaching philosophy. This course will help you learn the terminology and concepts necessary and provides you with the necessary background knowledge to discuss language instruction in an academic setting.
